Choosing to Give Up a Pet
Deciding to give up a pet can be a difficult decision.
We understand there are times when families must consider surrendering a pet. An unexpected life event—such as illness, death or unplanned move—may make caring for a pet seem impossible. Other times, people think they must give up their pet because they do not know how to handle a particular issue.
We encourage you to exhaust all other options. Many issues such as chewing, excessive barking, scratching furniture, house soiling and even allergies can be addressed. Juneau Animal Rescue can be a resource for recommendations that may help you keep your pet, or other options for rehoming.

Rehome your pet on your own
There are many people looking for pets in your community that are willing to meet with you directly. We strongly encourage person to person rehoming for previously spayed and neutered animals. A great resource to utilize for rehoming on your own is the Home to Home link below. Home To Home™ was created to help families, people, and pets with the difficult task of transitioning pet ownership from one home to another. Not only are we here to help, we have also enlisted animal shelters around the country to help us with our mission.

Surrendering a pet to JAR
JAR is now accepting owner surrendered pets through a managed intake process. To better serve the pets and people in our community with a surrender process that promotes a face-to-face exchange of information, Juneau Animal Rescue will now require a scheduled surrender appointment.
The appointment process, better known as “Managed Intake” in the national animal shelter community, will help us control the number of pets that enter JAR in accordance with our capacity and allows us the ability to provide the best possible care for each animal. A scheduled intake safeguards suitable staffing plans and supports the shelter in collecting robust animal history (medical history, behavior, and dietary needs) to better serve the rehoming/adoption process. It will also provide a variety of resources to an owner to make an informed decision prior to surrender. Background information is extremely important as it prepares our staff for the safe handling of animals and helps us communicate their history to potential adopters. Eliminating drop boxes and implementing a managed intake system is wholly supported by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (ASPCA), Best Friends Network (BFN), and Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV), among others.
